performance of the great symphonic works. After some years of effort the organisation grew to good dimensions and was incorporated Feb. 17, 1853. Many societies in every field of music have been incorporated since that time, but none has been such an important factor in New York's orchestral history as the Philharmonic Society.1
The highest orchestral standard, however, which America ever attained, has been achieved by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, an organisation which may well compare with any of the orchestras of Europe. We have already, at the end of the preceding chapter, sketched the circumstances which led to the establishment of this band. It began its labours in 1881.
